The roots of Alloy Welding and Fabricating trace back to the craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit of the Wunderlich family and the early days of custom metal fabrication in Northeast Ohio.
In the early 1940s, Ralph T. Wunderlich, a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering, began his career with Lincoln Electric, gaining valuable experience in welding technology and fabrication. After seven years in the industry, Ralph established his own business, Bedford Body Clinic, in Bedford. Built on precision craftsmanship and innovative fabrication techniques, the business evolved into Wunderlich Fabricating Company and later became known as WunderWeld.
From its earliest days, the company developed a strong specialty in stainless steel fabrication, serving industries that require high-quality, sanitary metal work. One of the company’s first customers was Ben Venue Laboratories, a pharmaceutical manufacturer located just across the street from the Bedford shop. That early partnership helped establish the company’s reputation for precision stainless steel fabrication.
As the company’s capabilities grew, it began supporting additional manufacturers in the region. When Stouffer's opened its plant in Solon, the company fabricated stainless steel components and equipment for the facility, expanding its work in the food manufacturing industry.
Ralph’s brother, Herbert “Herb” Wunderlich, played a key role in expanding the company’s expertise. After serving as a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War, Herb became a co-owner and founder of WunderWeld, and later founded Wunderlich Alloy Welding, which focuses on specialized alloy and stainless steel welding.
In 1979, Herb relocated the business to Oakwood Village, where it continued to grow and serve industrial customers throughout Northeast Ohio.
In 1994, the company expanded its fabrication capabilities by purchasing Tameran Manufacturing's sheet metal fabrication business and relocating operations to its Solon facility. The following year, in 1995, the company entered a new chapter when it was purchased by Bill Kelly, who continued building on the strong foundation established by the Wunderlich brothers.
In 2014, Alloy Welding & Fabricating was acquired by Tungsten Capital Partners, becoming part of a growing family of industrial manufacturing companies that includes Skidmore-Wilhelm, Bowes, and Fillero. This partnership strengthened the company’s ability to continue investing in equipment, talent, and advanced fabrication capabilities.
Today, Alloy Welding & Fabricating continues its tradition of craftsmanship and innovation, combining decades of experience with modern manufacturing techniques, and specializes in precision stainless steel fabrication for pharmaceutical, food processing, and industrial applications.
